Why Do Some Companies Grow and Prosper While Most of the Others Die? 

Because of our backgrounds, we are often asked about the long term viability of companies. This question has been in the news a lot lately with the death of Steve Jobs. Can Apple survive without him? 

Why are we asked this question? It is because our team members have worked at GE which is 120 years old, at 3M which was founded 110 years ago and at Accenture, a company that grew to the world’s largest consulting firm during a period of more than three decades of severe industry consolidation. 

The current and historical evidence is pretty clear. Once high flyers like Netflix 
are fighting for survival. 40 percent of all newly created companies last less than 
10 years. One-third of the companies listed on the 1970 Fortune 500 have
vanished. The news is full of stories about companies who had great visions and 
well thought out strategic plans but seemed incapable of executing them well. 
B.P., H.P. and Netfix are but a few examples. On the other hand, there are 
exceptions like Stora, a Swedish pulp, paper and chemical company that is 
700 years old and Sumitomo, a Japanese conglomerate that began in 1590. 

We were intrigued by these statistics. We have seen what works (and what 
doesn’t) first hand. As a result, we decided to pool our collective experiences
and insights to help organizations and corporations that believe they are not 
living up to their full potential. 

Why Are We Doing This, Why Do We Care? …

During our almost 100 years of executive and senior consulting experience at some of the world’s great companies like Accenture, GE, 3M and others we’ve collectively worked with and observed hundreds of business leaders, thousands of managers, and have been part of the development of thousands of products. 

We’ve seen hundreds of leaders who step into a new role with incredible intentions, enthusiasm and some apprehension … all of which are good. The problem is that it takes far too long for them to unleash the full power of their leadership that comes from creating a unifying vision in the hearts and minds of the people. 

We know the typical leadership attempt to creating clarity and alignment characterized by what we call “fly away, reconcile, communicate and order” approach just does not work.  We know there is a better way!
